How does Covid-19 impact heart disease? A new study finds out

A new study has found that damage to the heart's major blood vessel and other heart complications are more common during the course of Covid-19 infection than with other pneumonia-inducing viral infections.

The study, published in Clinical & Translational Immunology, reviewed current evidence of acute and long-term cardiovascular consequences of Covid-19 infection and a possible link to cardiovascular disease.

The study authors define acute heart complications as the irregular beating of the heart; damage or disease in the heart's major blood vessels, which can prevent the heart from receiving enough oxygen; and heart failure. People hospitalised for severe Covid-19 were scrutinised for such complications.
