The department of health reminds parents and caregivers to ensure that children are up to date with the child immunisation schedule to prevent vaccine-preventable diseases, including polio.
Polio is highly contagious and primarily affects children under five by infecting the neurological system. It can induce total paralysis in a few hours and even death. Initial symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, vomiting, neck stiffness and limb discomfort.
