Most cases of hives that recur over time and persist for more than 6 weeks are actually not due to an allergy and may be triggered by internal auto-immune factors. Keep a diary of triggers such as medications (ibuprofen), preservatives and foods as well as document any co-existant illness (sinusitis, urinary infection, tonsillitis, and fungal infections). It may respond to a simple non-prescription antihistamine such as cetirizine, loratadine or fexofenadine.
