Videos showing a South African teacher and his Korean pupils performing gumboot dances has gone viral.
One of the benefits of travel is exploring other cultures and learning how other people live – and sometimes, you get to share your own culture with them too.
That’s exactly what Thembinkosi Tera Mkonko, who teaches English in South Korea, did when he taught his young pupils how to perform this uniquely South African dance.
The gumboot dance originated among SA mineworkers when they started using their Wellington boots, aka gumboots, to drum messages to each other on the floor as they were forced to work for hours in silence.
The rhythmic dance quickly spread to communities surrounding the mines and became an artform that’s still practiced today.
