A London model escaped with her life after she managed to send a selfie to her friend that showed how she’d been assaulted by her boyfriend.
Martha Dolak (31), who’s a swimsuit model and originally from Poland, and her boyfriend, Michael Goodwin (30), had been together for 18 months but she became fed up with his aggressive behaviour, The Sun reports.
Michael locked Martha in his flat after seeing a text message from her friend that encouraged her to leave him.
According to Martha, he locked her in the flat in the south of London and detained her there for 21 hours.
“When he saw the text message he was livid. I was terrified so I tried to get my things and go. He told me I couldn't leave and locked both the doors,” she said in an exclusive interview with The Sun.
When she went to the window to see if there was a way of getting out safely, she felt a hard blow to her head. She can’t remember anything of what happened next.
"I woke up in bed. I knew he must have put me there but I couldn't move. I couldn't feel my legs and I had the most painful headache.
"I couldn't lift my head up at all. My eye wouldn't open and my face felt thick with dry blood,” Martha told the newspaper.
At that point she decided to take a photo of her face to see what damage Michael had caused her. She became terrified when she saw herself.
"I sent the picture to my friend so that she would get help. It was only afterwards that I realised he had kicked me in the head.”
Her friend alerted Martha’s parents and her dad, who apparently doesn’t have a good command of English, went to the police with the picture.
The police launched a search for Michael, but he’d returned to flat on his own and took Martha to a hospital in South London. He instructed her to tell the police she’d fallen down stairs but she later she told police the truth.
She sustained facial injuries and skull fractures in the attack which resulted in bleeding on the brain. She also suffered permanent damage to her optical nerve.
Michael was convicted of assault and contravening an interdict in the Kingston crown court and sentenced to four years and three months in jail.
Martha hopes her disclosures will help other women to come forward with experiences of assault.
