The scar on his abdomen is long and unsightly, but the devoted father lifts his shirt up and shows it off with pride. For Adrian McGear it’s a badge of honour, a symbol of everything he and his daughter have been through. “I donated a piece of my liver to her,” he says proudly.

Adrian (29) has already bounced back from the op, but it took his one-year-old daughter, Stella, much longer.

He and his wife, Judine (31), will never forget the nights spent next to her bed in ICU wondering if their little girl was ever going to recover. They could only look on helplessly as she lay hooked up to a ventilator in a medically induced coma.
