It’s the time of year when those healthy-living resolutions start giving way to old habits – and between the aftermath of 2020 and an ongoing pandemic, we can all take a leaf from Tumi Morake’s book.

The actress and comedienne recently penned an open letter to herself on Instagram about maintaining self-love while she's gained weight after having lost kilos before.

She’s always been candid about her body and health journey and credits her confidence in speaking out about it to a young woman she met at an event in 2019.

“She shared with me how she had not wanted to attend her graduation ceremony, even though she was graduating cum laude, because she saw herself as huge and unattractive. She then went on to tell me about how she loved how comfortable I was in my own skin, when I was bigger,” Tumi recalls.

“When I lost weight, she decided that she too could lose weight. The woman before me was a sexy size 36 in tank top, okay! Ever since then, I take nothing I say or do for granted”.

We caught up with Tumi who shared her journey and her new-found perspective on health.

What motivates you?

My current motivation is my mental well-being and not weight loss. Ill health is so expensive – it taxes you emotionally, physically and financially.

What does body positivity mean to you?

It’s about being conscious of how you carry your body: is it an apology or a celebration? It is about being gentle with yourself and embracing the package that presents you to the world.

What is your self-love affirmation?

I am extraordinary, packaged in love, delivered with care.

What does your fitness routine consist of?

I have taken up yoga and a new eating regimen. I’m not even aiming for weight loss anymore, just trying to regain strength and health.

What is your advice for someone who loses their way on their fitness journey?

Be gentle with yourself. Before you start beating yourself up, retrace your steps, take a deep breath and start again – or start a new track.
