Bafana Bafana seal last 16 passage with comfortable display against struggling Tunisians

Bafana Bafana showed character to cleverly manage Tunisia and advance to the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) after finishing second in Group E.

The South Africans will now face the winners of Group F – which consists of Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia and Tanzania – on Wednesday in San Pedro.

The performance wasn't flashy, but it was efficient against a Tunisian team that threatened to flip the script on Bafana and bounce back in the last group match after a dismal showing previously.

The drama and heart-stopping finishes of the last round of matches in Group A right up to D supported the Tunisian's belief....

FULL-TIME: Bafana Bafana 0-0 Tunisia

Bafana Bafana has booked their place in Round 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations, securing their knockout ticket with a goalless draw against Tunisia in the final Group E match.

South Africa will now face the winner of Group F (Morocco, DR Congo, Zambia or Tanzania) on Tuesday, 30 January (22:00 SA time), after finishing as runners-up of their group behind Mali, who will take on Burkina Faso.

Namibia, meanwhile, advanced as one of the best third-place nations and will meet Angola on Saturday. Tunisia's tournament ends here.

Tanzania will play DR Congo, while Morocco faces Zambia at 22:00 (SA time) tonight. By midnight, Bafana will know who they will meet in their knockout tie next week.

No calculators needed for Bafana tonight.

24 January 20:51

FIVE MINUTES OFF ADDDITIONAL TIEME ADDED ON!

24 January 20:50

88 min: A golden opportunity for Tunisia to score and put South Africa to their misery. But Jouini couldn't keep his header down.

24 January 20:45

83 min: SUBSTITUTION

Bafana - Lepasa comes to the fore as well in place of Makgopa

Tunisia - Skhiri taken off for Romdhan

24 January 20:41

80 min: One veteran for another veteran as Monare comes on for Zwane.

24 January 20:40

76 min: CHANCE! And Bafana cracks open the can of attack. Sithole delivers a superb, low, and powerful strike from approximately 25 yards. The ball almost finds the bottom corner, but Ben Said makes a crucial save, deflecting it to safety.

24 January 20:34

72 min: Tunisia cannot unlock this Bafana defence and have been below par in the final third. Bafana have, however, done all they could to lessen any mistakes. They are also managing the game very well but are not doing much on attack. Broos' side are more than okay with sitting back and slowing down the game.

24 January 20:32

CHANGE: Tunisia

ON - Ltaief, Sliti, Jouini

OFF - Rafia, Achouri, Jaziri

24 January 20:29

CHANGE: Bafana

ON: Maseko

OFF: Morena

24 January 20:22

CHANGE: Tunisia

ON - Msakni

OFF - Slimane

24 January 20:13

50 min: While this match has been highly tactical battle, both sides have been utterly poor when decisions have to be made in the final third. Bafana are perfectly fine to sit back and play on the counterattack. A draw suits them. For Tunisia, they have applied the press more often and are winning second balls.

24 January 20:04

CHANGE: Mudau off, Mobbie on.

24 January 20:03

45 min: The second half is now underway ...

24 January 19:55

Half-time statistics
Half-time statistics

24 January 19:30

27 min: CHANCE! Percy Tau slithers pasts a sea of red jerseys as the Tunisians are caught on the back foot. He dazzled into the penalty area, then sneakingly cross for an oncoming Makgopa. The Orlando Pirates striker gets a head on it and misses the target by a whisker from an acute angle.

The best chance of the match.

24 January 19:25

21 min: CHANCE! Kechrida again getting beyond Modiba - AGAIN! The winger squeezes through a tasteful through ball, for a red shirt to latch onto and just tap in. However, Mudau, Bafana's best player in this tie so far, is perfectly positioned to backheel the ball to safety.

24 January 19:18

15 min: Aubrey Modiba has been a liability, losing his duels and being sucked in, leaving space for Tunisia to capitalise on. Luckily for Bafana, Mvala and Kekana have come to the rescue of any threat.

Meanwhile, Bafana are slowly getting back into the tie regarding possession. Passing has been good, as well as finding space, but the Tunisian back four have been solid as a rock thus far.

24 January 19:11

Permutations:

Bafana will approach their match against Tunisia with a sense of comfort.

A victory would secure their spot in the knockout stage, and even a draw might be sufficient for them to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

On the other hand, Tunisia, with only one point, must secure a win, regardless of the outcome between Mali and Namibia, in a match that kicks off simultaneously.

If Tunisia triumphs against South Africa and Namibia defeats Mali, Bafana Bafana would be eliminated.

24 January 19:08

5 min: As anticipated, both Tunisia and South Africa strongly desire to take the initiative. Bafana, with Ronwen Williams in goal, are employing the long ball as a strategic approach.

On the other hand, the North Africans are opting to play out from the back, gaining an advantage in the midfield but encountering a resilient South African defence at the moment.

24 January 19:00

1 min: Bafana's Themba Zwane gets this match underway ...

24 January 18:59

Just an interesting observation here from Korhogo, Ivory Coast.

This match takes place at Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium.

The weather all day round was high, 36 degrees Celcius.

The Humidity, however, was at a low of 12, while the wind, as well, is relatively low at 13 km/h.

24 January 18:56

And lastly, the Tunisian anthem ...

24 January 18:54

Now for the South African national anthem ...

#LETSGOOO!!!

24 January 18:53

We are gearing up here, as the players exit the tunnel for the last time to get this fiery and epic Afcon tie underway.

24 January 18:45

Jalel Kadri – Tunisia Coach: "We know people are expecting a lot from us. We are in a difficult group and need to play well in order to succeed. We have to start with high concentration in the match. We have several players with experience, but we still need to work hard to get the victory. South Africa has a team of players who have experience on the continent from Mamelodi Sundowns. Tunisia needs to use its strength. SA is good offensively and we should be ready for that.

Seifeddine Jaziri – Tunisia Forward: "We know it will not be easy and when we are in this situation, we only rely on God. We have to be present on a physical aspect and also present across all levels. The team performs better when they are in difficult situations. We will take up our responsibility and play well in order to make Tunisians happy."

Words from Bafana defender Kekana:

"Everyone is confident and looking forward to tomorrow. We don’t want to go home early. We will try our best to get a good result. We are fortunate enough at Sundown to experience different conditions of Africa.

"Sometimes, the hostility as well. It has played a big role in how we approach this AFCON. The level is very high, and all teams want to win. We are grateful that we have played in the Champions League, which has helped us in this tournament."

Words from Bafana coach Broos:

"Our first goal was to achieve the second round and pass the group stages. Our opponent has a slight advantage since they have had a day more to prepare. However, after Sunday’s big victory, we have a boost of energy.

"The team will be ready. We know Tunisia is a great team. I think they underestimated Namibia; the match against Mali is what we will analyze. We will fight every second for a good result. It will be a very heated game. They are under pressure, but the same applies to us because if we lose, it will be a tricky situation."

24 January 18:40

After their convincing 4-0 victory over Namibia, South Africa will come up against Tunisia in search of a win.

The South African team rebounded impressively from their 2-0 defeat to Mali, showcasing a high-scoring performance against Namibia on Sunday.

On the other hand, Tunisia, who suffered a surprising 1-0 loss to Namibia in their opening game, managed to secure a 1-1 draw against Mali.

Both teams are eager for nothing less than a victory in this crucial encounter.

With an outside chance of qualification, Tunisia holds a single point, while Bafana Bafana is in second place behind group leaders Mali.

24 January 18:07

*** Team news just in:

Bafana - Hugo Broos has opted to stick with the same starting XI that trounced Namibia. However, on the formation sheet, it looks as if Sithole will play a deeper role as a defensive midfielder, while Zwane shifts from a forward role to his usual midfield attacking role, slotting next to Mokoena. Tau is wide and forward on the left flank.

Tunisia - A surprise from the North African technical team as the ever influential Msakni starts on the bench for continental giants.

Bafana Bafana are unchanged tonight. No shocks there. They were excellent against Namibia even though the penalty was very fortunate to open the scoring. They denied Namibia even one shot in the second half. However, Tunisia have won both previous meetings between these teams, both at the AFCON.
0'
Tunisia subs: Mouez, Romdhan, Msakni, Jouini, Maaloul, Jlassi, Hadadi, Aymen, Ltaief, Srarfi, Yan, Sliti.
0'
South Africa subs: Mobbie, Mashego, Xulu, Appollis, Adams, Maseko, Monare, Mothwa, Lepasa, Sibisi, Mayambela, Goss.
0'
Tunisia starting XI: Ben Said, Elabdi, Talbi, Meriah (c), Rafia, Ben Slimane, Laidouni, Skhiri, Kechrida, Jaziri, Elyes.
0'
South Africa starting XI: Williams, Mudau, Kekana, Mvala, Modiba, Mokoena, Sithole, Morena, Zwane, Tau, Makgopa.

For Tunisia, things are a bit more straightforward. The North Africans must win this to qualify for the next round. A draw will not be enough as they only have one point from their two games and that would almost certainly not be enough even as a third-placed side.
0'
South Africa have three points after thrashing Namibia 4-0 in their last game are are second in the table. Even if South Africa lose they can still qualify as one of the four best third-placed teams. They lost 2-0 to Mali in their opener.
0'
Mali, who currently top the group on four points, play Namibia at the same time as this game. Mali have secured qualification but any of the other three can still join them.
0'
Welcome to our live coverage of the Africa Cup of Nations Group E encounter between South Africa and Tunisia. Kickoff is at 7pm SAST.
1'
KICKOFF! We are underway as referee Issa Sy of Senegal blows his whistle and South Africa get us going.
2'
Tunisia have begun on the front foot with most of the ball. That is no shock considering this is a must-win. Jaziri goes down the right and causes trouble and then strike partner Achouri wins a corner off Mvala.
4'
CLOSE! The ball is swung into the area and Meriah nearly gets a chance but Kekana does enough to put him off. The resultant second corner is caught by Williams.
7'
Top defending... Achouri tries to counter down the left for Tunisia but he comes up against Mudau, who is a top one-versus-one defender. He wins the ball and draws a foul, although he has taken a knock for his trouble.
8'
Foul: Achouri now goes studs up and high with his tackle on Mudau. That's an awful challenge and is, at least, a yellow card. How has the referee missed that?
11'
Kekana goes long from the back for Hugo Broos' team. It was aimed at Morena but it runs out for a goalkick. That pass got plenty of joy against Namibia but Tunisia are more aware of the threat.
12'
Two crosses come into the Bafana box and the second from Rafia is put behind for a corner. Abdi delivers from the right and it nearly finds the run of a teammate. You feel that set plays will be crucial this evening.
14'
We now see a spell of Bafana pressure around the Tunisia box. The ball is circulated from flank to flank but when the cross is delivered, Morena flicks it wide. The problem was that target man Makgopa was the player delivery the ball from out wide on the left!
15'
CRUNCH! Rafia tries to break into the box for the Eagles of Carthage but Mvala takes no prisoners and aggressively wins the tackle just outside the area. He may be a relatively recently converted centre back, but Mvala looks at home in that role. In 12 league starts in his new role last season, his club Mamelodi Sundowns kept 10 clean sheets!
18'
Makgopa moves wide and wins a corner for South Africa. Tau plays an inswinging corner but goalkeeper Said is fouled by Mvala.
20'
After 20 minutes, Bafana Bafana have had 54% possession
22'
WIDE! Some slick Tunisia play sees Jaziri tee up the overlapping Kechrida to deliver into the box from the right. Mudua clears with a backheel at the far post before Skhiri blasts the loose ball high and wide from 25 yards.
25'
South Africa are giving the ball away so carelessly right now. Makgopa is caught on the ball and it leads to pressure. When Bafana try to break, they lack an outlet and find themselves pinned back.
26'
Wide! Kechrida comes forward from right back for Tunisia and Jaziri heads well wide from the delivery. Modiba is finding himself overloaded on South Africa's left.
27'
CHANCE! Tau comes to life suddenly. He drifts over to the right, picks it up and bursts through a gap. He gets to the byline and crosses towards Makgopa but the Pirates forward heads wide at the near post. That was a difficult opportunity but an opening nonetheless.
30'
A slight lull in the action now. The heat may be taking it's toll on the players with 30+ degree weather.
31'
A South Africa counter ends with Modiba having a shot blocked. The latter then has his foot stamped on by Kechrida for what should have been a yellow card... but the referee missed the contact completely.
33'
WIDE! Morena drifts inside from the right and picks up the ball. He drives towards goal but his fierce strike goes over the crossbar.
35'
Mudau is now having some treatment. He has been in the wars today and SA can't afford to lose him for the knockout stages.
37'
Themba Zwane is growing in influence for Bafana Bafana. It's crazy that the 34 year old is earning just his 34th cap... he should be pushing towards the 100 mark by now.
39'
Close! Makgopa wins a freekick for SA. Mokoena delivers but Mvala can only nod it wide on the stretch. Nearly a goal for the birthday boy.
40'
Wide! Some class football by Bafana as Zwane is involved in tight spaces. His flick for Makgopa sees Tau tees up to try his luck. The effort goes over the bar though.
42'
Tunisia are getting frustrated here. Firstly, by the strong SA pressing but mostly by Zwane and Tau's skill in tight spaces to tease the North Africans Let's see if any Tunisian will lash out in frustration and earn a card.
43'
After 43 mins, South Africa lead 6-5 on shots over Tunisia. It's been an even and tight affair but remember, a draw is not enough for Tunisia this evening -- they will have to open up in the second half.
45'
HALF TIME. This is as tight and cagey as we expected. Neither side has scored or created anything clear. Tunisia arguably started a bit stronger but Bafana Bafana grew into the half and began to frustrate the Eagles of Carthage. Perhaps we will see fireworks after the break. Join us in 15 minutes to find out. South Africa 0-0 Tunisia.
45'
Added time: two minutes.
45'
Achouri and Mudau are having another scuffle. The latter has lost patience with being fouled constantly and getting no protection from the referee.
46'
KICKOFF! The second half is underway with one SUB for South Africa: Mobbie on for Mudau.
47'
FYI: the other game is Group E is currently Mali 0-0 Namibia.
49'
It has not been the most classy start to this half. Both sides are giving the ball away constantly and a game of head tennis ensued not long ago. Tunisia may be trying to turn the game a bit ugly by creating more transition moments.
52'
CLOSE! A long diagonal is volleyed across the area by Abdi but Mvala does just enough to put Slimane off as Tunisia try to grab the opener.
55'
It's tense here. Bafana Bafana are stroking the ball around but when they give it away, Tunisia have the speed and power to cause issues on the break. Jalel Kadri will want more than just some counter attacks from his Tunisia side, though.
58'
SUB, Tunisia: Slimane goes off for Msakni, who wins his 100th cap for his country. How they need a goal from him now.
60'
We've only seen one shot from each team in this second half. To be perfectly honest, it's been a far more dull period than anything we saw in the first half.
62'
Strong Bafana Bafana defending sees Zwane released on the break. He turns well and Msakni pulls him back. Has this referee forgotten his yellow cards at home this evening?
64'
Close! Modiba goes clear down the left for SA and swings in a teasing cross. Talbi does well to clear the ball for Tunisia with Tau waiting to pounce.
67'
SUB, South Africa: Morena heads off with Maseko introduced.
70'
Triple SUB, Tunisia: Achouri, Rafia and Jaziri head off. Sliti, Ltaief and Jouini come on.
71'
Maseko tumbles in the box for Bafana Bafana but he has clearly dived there. The referee scolds him but doesn't issue a booking. This adds weight to the earlier suspicion that he didn't pack his yellow cards when he left the hotel for this fixture.
72'
Sliti delivers a corner for Tunisia which Williams catches. That came about from Abdi bursting behind Mobbie and the latter making a well-timed but risky saving tackle in the area.
74'
Kechrida with a cross from the right for Tunisia but it's blocked and bounces to Williams. It's such a shock how little the North Africans have created, they look impotent and a bit clueless.
76'
Maseko wins a corner which Mokoena delivers. It's cleared out to Mobbie who swipes wildly at a volley. He gets a chance to deliver a cross but it is totally overcooked.
77'
SAVE! Sithole fires off a shot from distance which forces Said into a save. Tau gets to the rebound but he was offside and the flag goes up against the Al Ahly winger.
78'
WIDE! South Africa counter at speed through Tau. He finds Mokoena who fires off a long shot which goes wide.
79'
CLOSE! Tunisia are falling apart. They lose the ball near their area and Tau has a shot which deflects narrowly wide.
80'
SUB, South Africa: Monare comes on for Zwane. The latter's last act was to be clattered at a corner, not that the referee saw that infringement either.
81'
SAVE! Makgopa meets Mokoena's corner with a near post header and forces goalkeeper Said into a save.
83'
SUB, South Africa: Lepasa comes on up front in place of club teammate Makgopa.
84'
SUB, Tunisia: Ben Romdhan replaces Skhiri.
85'
The other score in this group is still Mali 0-0 Namibia. As it stands, Tunisia are exiting the competition and Namibia look set to progress as one of the best third-placed finishers.
88'
South Africa are totally in control here. They're enjoying possession and final third territory at times. Tunisia look ordinary and defeated... but it's not over yet.
89'
DRAMA! Just as Tunisia looked dead and buried, they create a huge CHANCE. Jouini is free in the box to meet a cross but he heads wide from about six yards out. That one was easier to score for a target man.
90'
FULL TIME. South Africa 0-0 Tunisia. The North Africans exit the AFCON whilst Bafana have reached the knockout stages. Well done to Hugo Broos and his technical team. Let's see who Bafana Bafana will face in the last 16! Thanks for joining us tonight for a tight game where the sides cancelled each other out.
90'
+5' a late, late Tunisia corner... can they make this count? The ball comes into the area but Meriah nods it wide on the stretch. That ends their hopes of progression.
90'
+1' Sliti delivers a freekick which causes danger in Tunisia's favour but he gets it back and shoots well wide from a narrow angle.
90'
Added time: five minutes.
