One of the best activities during lockdown was the freedom of heading out for a jog. Working out suddenly got creative when gyms were closed, from free workouts on YouTube and lifting weights in our lounge to walking around the neighbourhood.

First timers can start small and track their progress using the Apple Watch Series 7. The latest Apple Watch is available in many variants, one of them being the Nike edition. The Apple Watch Nike is the ultimate running partner; it lets you connect to the Nike Run Club app with pace charts and streaks available, or the option to apply Nike watch faces.

Even without the Nike edition, you can purchase any version, and swap out the straps for working out. Who says you need to reactivate your gym membership again? Simply focus on closing your activity rings, get rewarded with badges and take part in fun limited-edition workouts to keep the motivation going in your new fitness journey.

Cellular Edition

The Apple Watch Series 7 Cellular edition means you can head out without carrying an iPhone. You can jog anywhere, confident that if anything bad should happen you’re covered with 24/7 armed response - you can get a free six month subscription to ReactPlus when you purchase your Apple Watch from iStore.

If you want to listen to your favourite playlist while jogging, just connect your pair of AirPods, pop them in and off you go. Apple Watch now supports offline playlists on Spotify, in addition to Apple Music, making it the ultimate running companion. You have the freedom to play your favourite tracks while hitting your personal goals, beginner or not.

A quick checklist before you head out: Apple Watch Series 7, AirPods and offline playlists. And if you have Apple Pay loaded onto it, you can grab a smoothie afterwards.

Other features supported on the cellular edition include the ability to make and receive calls or texts, control your smart home, use the Walkie Talkie app, and access Siri, Weather, Maps and Stocks.

Tracking workouts

Apple’s default Workout app is a good way to track your runs or activities, which provides in-depth stats. Once paired with an iPhone, simply head to the Watch app and choose what metrics you’d like to focus on for your runs. You can choose a maximum of five, including duration, heart rate, distance, total calories, elevation gain, cadence, etc.

When you record a run, be it indoors or outdoors, it alertes  you for every km you hit, which is also useful for long distance runners. A shortcut can be created on your watch face to start a workout instantly. Once a workout is in progress, you have access to basic controls, summary of workout, and the ability to control your music.

Close your activity rings

The Apple Watch simplifies your daily activity goals by splitting it into three categories: move, exercise and stand. Your single goal is to close them all every day, which is not at all intimidating because you can choose individual limits based on your fitness levels.

The red ring symbolises your Move goal, measuring the active calories you burn during the day, based on your heart rate, movement, and general activity. The green ring, Exercise, is set by default to 30 minutes to kickstart your fitness journey. The blue ring is for Stand. The goal is to get up and move around for at least a minute, just once an hour, for 12 hours a day.

If you need a bit of a nudge, your watch can remind you to stand before the hour is up. The Activity app also lets you view other stats like steps, recorded workouts, flights climbed, and badges and awards earned from meeting your goals, Apple’s monthly ones, and limited-edition ones.
