Treverton College pupils and teachers are hiking the Drakensberg Grand Traverse.

The 250km-long hike starts at Sentinel Car Park and finishes at the Bushman's Neck Border Post.

The 10-person team will also summit  Mont-aux-Sources, Champagne Castle, Mafadi, Giant's Castle, and Thabana Ntlenyana over 15 days from 25 March to 8 April.

Two girls from the Mooi River school in KwaZulu-Natal, Karijn Kooy and Georgie Thompson, are the first female participants to join the hike.

They will do so along with three boys, Alexander and Konstantino Giokos and Daniel Jonck, school headmaster Kean Broom, teachers Derek Brown, Chanelle Oosthuizen, Shaun Robertson, and the school's cameraman, Ethan Lundy.

Teacher Travers Pellew told News24 Kooy and Thompson excelled in physical activities, such as trail-running and cross country.

He said the team summitted the Mafadi peak on Friday afternoon.

"The next iconic peak they will summit in the next two days is Giant's Castle," he added.

The team will facilitate two food drops during the intense hike.

The first will be hiked up the Organ Pipes Pass by a separate team of Treverton College hikers on Day 5. To reduce the weight of this food drop for those bringing it up to us, we have chosen to go with dehydrated food provided by the Trail Food Company. The second will be driven up to Sani Pass pub on Day 12, where we look forward to having a hot meal.

Last year, two boys, Jarred van Alphen and Kai Broom, became the first from the college to conquer the traverse. The two, who are now in matric, completed the hike in 10 days.

This year, they conquered the gruelling 100km run from the Northern Traverse within 30 hours at 05:00 on 27 March.
