The Women's Legal Centre (WLC) and the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) commended the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) for upholding the National Prosecuting Authority's appeal against the acquittal of a man who was sentenced for raping his girlfriend.
The WLC said the SCA had remedied a dangerous precedent, set by the High Court in Makhanda, for women who experience sexual abuse by intimate partners.
On Wednesday, the SCA reinstated the rape conviction of Loyiso Coko. He was initially found guilty in the Makhanda Regional Court in September 2020, which was then overturned by the high court.
