Clothing your Bed

As we journey through rainy autumn into the South African winter, you may find yourself at the ideal moment to decide how to spruce up your bed for the best sleep on frosty winter nights (and the cosiest lie-ins on lazy mornings). Similar to the way layered clothing allows for better thermal regulation without becoming overly bulky, winter bedding combined in layers creates optimal comfort while keeping you toasty all night.

Start at the Bottom

The most effective foundation for your comfy bed is a quilted mattress topper. Besides the soft-touch cushioning, the quilted design traps pockets of air that better shield your body against the chill.

Follow this with a brushed cotton fitted sheet. Cotton is a plant fibre that retains its natural thermo-regulating properties when woven or knitted, allowing for fabric that is durable and easy to care for and prevents a warm bed from feeling too stuffy. In addition, brushed cotton enhances the fibrous nature of natural cotton, creating a plush touch and even better thermal regulation through the microscopic air pockets between the brushed fibres.

Adding a brushed cotton flat sheet next provides a stabilising layer for the blankets, duvets, quilts and throws that you might like to include in your bedding stack, as it's generally slightly larger than other bedding components, allowing the sleeper to shift multiple layers together, without disrupting the whole. Brushed cotton is also a fantastic choice for winter pillowcases.

Layer love

Depending on where you live and how warm your house is, you could add one or multiple blankets next to the flat sheet. Layered, lighter blankets, like a woven cotton throw or our signature Cloud blanket, allow for warm sleep without unnecessary weight. Heavier blankets provide solidity and deep-tissue pressure that many find soothing for sleep - the Volpes Tasha blanket provides the ultimate plush indulgence. Keep your personal preferences in mind when planning your perfect winter bed.

Sleeping well isn't all about the bed, however. The airflow in a bedroom has a significant impact on the temperature, and dressing your windows with quality blockout curtains filters out unwanted light and limits the entry of cold air into the room.

To Top it All off

A winter duvet wins first prize when it comes to ultimate warmth and cosiness. By selecting a duvet cover set in brushed cotton, you can enfold the snuggle stack you've created with all the thermo-regulating properties of cotton. Choose a design that pulls together your bedroom decor, or opt for a more neutral duvet cover and add extra flair with a light quilt. Or select lighter layers throughout, with many thin blankets, topped with a quilt or comforter.

Elegantly drape or messily toss one or more Shimmersoft or Faux Fur throws over your finished winter bed. This will give you even more opportunity to add varied textures to the space, reinforcing the impression of comfort and relaxation for a peaceful haven inviting tired minds and chilly bodies.
