Service delivery failures in Johannesburg are eroding the once-flourishing City of Gold. The gas explosion that tore through the central business district last week is a blaring illustration of Joburg's collapse.

But the problem is bigger than the CBD blast - pothole-strewn roads, dilapidated buildings, dry traps, faulty power supply, busted traffic lights, and garbage littering the streets - everywhere you look there are signs of decay.

Who is to blame for the broken city and its crumbling infrastructure? Have turbulent coalitions and revolving mayors contributed to the metro's ruin?

How are Joburg residents surviving the dysfunction within municipality, and what will it take to salvage the iconic economic capital which has lost its glow?
