Disgraced Tembisa Hospital CEO Ashley Mthunzi was paid R2.5 million for no work done while suspended - and will continue the slow bleed of state coffers, even in death, through his plush government pension.

Mthunzi was a key role-player in a R1-billion extraction scheme exposed by Babita Deokaran, just weeks before her assassination in 2021.

At the time of his death 10 days ago, Mthunzi had been suspended while undergoing a marathon disciplinary inquiry, which dragged on for nearly two years. Because he died while "in service", his estate is entitled to a legacy of payments from the Government Employee Pension Fund (GEPF).
