When it comes to employee rights, Danie Mars from Kariega is passionate about encouraging every employed person to familiarise themselves with them. Mars said in the almost 40 years that he has worked, he’s seen and experienced some of the most traumatic things in the workplace...“and that’s why I’ve decided to put it all in a book,” the 65-year-old said.
“A few years ago I decided to write a book detailing some of the hardships I went through while still in the workforce. I experienced so many things that were just wrong, and I decided that I was not going to just sit and do nothing about it. I escalated the matter further and further, and when the company I worked for didn’t take my grievances seriously, I involved the law,” Mars said.
Many South Africans face challenges in the workplace, but often don’t know how to deal with them, whom to go to first, and what processes to follow.
“People end up suffering psychological damage due to the hardships they face at their jobs, and if like me when I still worked, you work with heavy machinery, even physical injuries can alter your life forever,” Mars said.
The Suffocated Worker is Mars’ first book, and he says he is proud of putting it together and actually finishing it. “I would write this book in moments of isolation, and I must say, even while writing it, I never thought I’d ever get to this point where I’m preparing to launch it.”
His wife, Roseline Mars has been incredibly supportive of her husband. “My family is a lovely suffocation,” Mars laughed, “I’m so grateful to have them, and the support they give me,” the father of three added.
Mars is planning on launching his book on Friday, November 24 at the Uitenhage Town Hall. “I do have a few copies of my book for people who would be interested in buying one before the intended launch.
