The vigilant Milnerton lifeguards leapt to action to save a distressed swimmer at Milnerton Beach on Sunday, 10 December, their fourth successful rescue in four weeks.
According to the Milnerton Lifesaving Club, around 15:45 on Sunday, voluntary duty lifeguard Andries Becker noted an adult male swimmer entering the water, approximately 600 m north of the club towards Sunset Beach.
Squad leader Ariel Mausenbaum and vice-squad leader Angelica Schon sent Javin Presence (17) and Andries Becker (17) to instruct the swimmer to move away from the dangerous swimming area.
While on their way the two saw the swimmer suddenly start struggling at the surface of the water, and it rapidly turned into a drowning in progress as he was being pulled out to sea.
“Javin and Andries sprinted . . . and swam out with their torpedo buoys to the man who was now about 50 m off shore,” the club said. “On reaching him they used their rescue buoys to provide flotation while swimming him back to shore.”
The patient was handed to fellow lifeguards and taken to the medical room for assessment and oxygen. Once recovered the 32-year-old man left the beach in the company of friends.
“We commend the vigilance and quick action of these two young voluntary lifeguards that ensured another life was saved today,” the club said.
