Ward 60 councillor Mark Kleinschmidt hosted over 150 seniors for a festive luncheon at the Lansdowne Civic Centre on Tuesday 12 December.

The event was arranged in partnership with the City of Cape Town’s Social Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate and Age in Action.

At the event, Kleinschmidt focused on awareness around elder abuse and being vigilant on South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) payout days, sighting a rise in card cloning and scams around this time of year.

The event aimed to ensure the seniors felt valued for their contribution to society.

In a bit of fun, some of the seniors participated in a dance competition to receive pot plants.

“We want them to continue to be role models in a degenerating society, where morals and manners are no longer at the forefront,” says Kleinschmidt.

Senior Margaret Adhkari says occasions like these allow seniors to connect and socialise.

“It is also a chance to communicate with each other and meet new people,” says fellow senior Anne Driver.

Each resident also received a care package.
