When recovering drug addict Jose Williams walked away from a life of addiction, crime, and prison, he chose to focus on being a father to his two daughters.
One of the many ways he chose to do this was to write a book titled, You, Me and ADHD, an ode to his foster daughter who has the condition.
A few months later, Williams wrote another book.
“The new book is titled, Abuse. It is inspired by the true life story of a guy still currently living on the streets of central Gqeberha.
“I aimed at giving him a voice. He is a hobo, and has been this way for more than a decade,” said Williams.
Due to his own past with substance abuse, Williams was touched by the young man on the street and his life.
“He doesn’t say much, and nobody speaks to him; it’s almost as if he does not exist. There are many others like him. Many who no longer have the voice to even ask for help; this is why I wrote this book,” explained Williams.
Williams is an unemployed, 41-year-old father of two teenage girls, and although his circumstances are challenging, he has chosen to do something with his talents and resources, instead of complaining and waiting to be saved.
“I’m trying to teach my girls, by showing them that in life giving up is not an option, as well as the importance of extending a helping hand while trying to lift yourself up. That is the true purpose of humanity.”
For budding writers Williams said the secret is to just start, and with what you have.
“First you have to be capable. Then you need to get going with writing, and of course you need a computer. You also need to be patient, all around, especially concerning your book. And yes, a lot of trust and endurance too,” he concluded.
