Parent involvement stands out as one factor at all schools in the Northern Cape where a 100% matric pass rate are achieved.
During the recent State of the Province Address by the premier of the Northern Cape, Dr Zamani Saul, emphasised this and reminded parents to take part in the School Governing Body (SGB) elections.
The official start of the SGB elections was on 1 March, to be concluded on 31 March.
A total of 554 public ordinary schools in the province are set to participate, said the Northern Cape Department of Education (DOE).
The most important and first function of a SGB is to promote the best interest of the school to ensure its development through the provision of quality education for all learners at the school.
The DOE has put systems in place to ensure the SGB elections are run smoothly and in accordance with the principles of democracy, transparency, non-racism, non-sexism, accountability and with the responsibility it deserves.
DOE stated it has been proven that SGBs play a crucial role in the success of schools. Schools with effective and efficient SGB members are most likely to secure greater success than those with limited parental and community involvement.
SGBs are responsible for policy issues and management of school finances, ensuring the safety of schools and other broader functions resulting in its overall functionality.
Parents are reminded to ensure their details are on the school’s admission register, which will be used as the school’s voter’s roll.
No parent will be allowed to take part in the SGB elections should their names not be in the school’s admission register. Have your ID document or drivers licence ready, as it will be required on the day of the parent component election.
