A 35-year-old male suspect has been arrested by Madeira Police after he allegedly raped a 21-year-old female victim at gunpoint at Slovo Park outside Mthatha on Saturday, 27 January at about 23:00.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Welile Matyolo, it is alleged that the victim was hitchhiking on her way to Dosi locality around Mthatha when she was given a lift by the suspect on a black/navy vehicle.
"The suspect drove the vehicle to his place in Slovo Park, where he forced the victim into a bedroom and raped her," said Matyolo.
"The suspect then took the victim back to town and dropped her without taking her to where she wanted to go.
"The victim went to Madeira police station and opened a case of rape also reporting that a firearm was used to threaten her," Matyolo added.
"Police followed the information, and the 35-year-old suspect was arrested and was found in possession of a 9mm pistol and ammunition."
The suspect will appear at Mthatha Magistrate court on Monday, January 29 on charges of rape and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
