The Mthatha Specialised Commercial Crimes Court has granted 52-year-old medical doctor, Anele Simon Mani R5000 bail following his appearance before the court today, March 7, on tax fraud charges.

This comes after his arrest by the Mthatha based serious commercial crime investigation unit of the Hawks on February 9.

“It is alleged that during the period between July 2009 and May 2013 the accused, practising in Mthatha as a medical doctor, contravened the Tax Administration Act.”

“It is reported that the accused is registered for Personal Income Tax as well as Value Added Tax (VAT) vendor, as a result he is liable for the calculation, payment of VAT and is also required to submit VAT 201 returns to South African Revenue Services (SARS) in accordance with provisions of the VAT Act,” said provincial Hawks spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela.

According to Mgolodela an audit was conducted by SARS into both VAT and Personal Income Tax of the accused and it was picked up that the accused under declared in both his returns.

Mgolodela said their investigations revealed that SARS was prejudiced cash of more than R880 000 as a result of 26 counts of fraud in both VAT and Personal Income Tax.

Provincial Hawks head Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya lauded the team for the expertise in carrying out their detection job.

The accused will be back in court on April 6, 2023, for trial.
