Elderly people from different wards of the Mnquma Local Municipality were treated like royalty, and showered with gifts, as the local municipality hosted a Christmas lunch for them.
The event, held at the Butterworth Town Hall on December 6, saw a host of municipal councillors, led by the executive mayor, Councillor Tunyiswa Manxila-Nkamisa, as well as municipal manager, Silumko Mahlasela, joining the elderly men and women in song and dance during the occasion.
In a short message at the gathering, Manxila-Nkamisa said that the municipality appreciated the role played by elderly citizens in communities.
She urged the elderly to always prioritise their own safety considering the rampant abuse and attacks targeted at elderly people.
“I feel very happy and honoured to have been part of the Christmas lunch that our municipality hosted for us as elderly citizens.
Elder David Nomngqokwana (72) who hails from Centane, said,
Mhlontlo Local Municipality also held a similar event when it hosted a Christmas party for its elderly citizens at Qumbu Town Hall on December 6.
The municipality said the event was not only a celebration, but a testament to its commitment to supporting and cherishing its elderly population.
