THE Mbhashe Local Municipality in Dutywa is expected to host the finals of the annual Mayor’s Cup at Ngxakaxa Sports Grounds near Dutywa town on Saturday.
More than 10 teams that performed well during the elimination rounds of the Mayor’s Cup are expected to compete in different sporting codes this weekend.
Teams coming from various wards in Mbhashe are expected to compete in sport such as ladies’ and boys’ soccer, netball, volleyball, and boxing.
The aim of the event is to contribute to the development of sport, particularly in rural areas, and also to divert youth from drugs and criminal activities.
The Mbhashe Mayor’s Cup was initiated last month with elimination rounds, where all wards from Mbhashe were given an opportunity to compete, so that the winning teams could progress to the finals of the event.
The first elimination games were hosted at Ngumbela Sports Ground near Dutywa town, and the second was staged in Elliotdale at the Matshamba Sports Grounds.
The last event of the elimination rounds was held at Nqadu Stadium in Willowvale over the weekend. During those games every ward in Mbhashe was represented by their teams in these different sporting codes.
On Saturday is the major event of the Mayor’s Cup, where teams that perform well are expected to win great prizes.
All residents, particularly parents around Mbhashe, are invited to come out in large numbers to support the event and their local teams.
Mbhashe Local Municipality Mayor, Councillor Samkelo Janda, and his colleagues, are expected to attend the event.
The event is expected to take place on Saturday and conclude on the same day, with music entertainment provided.
