Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose confirmed that a total of five people has died while 14 sustained injuries, from two separate accidents on Eastern Cape roads on Saturday, March 17.
Binqose said that the worst of those crashes occurred at about 17:30 on the N2 road in Mthatha near Sibangweni towards Qumbu, where two vehicles collided head-on.
He confirmed that in another incident, at about 18:00 on the Addo road in Gqeberha towards Addo a Toyota LDV with five occupants including a minor lost control and overturned.
“The vehicle was travelling from Gqeberha towards Addo, the male driver and a young boy in the vehicle died on the scene while two females and one male passenger sustained severe injuries and were taken to Uitenage Provincial Hospital.
"Culpable homicide has been opened for each of these crashes.”
