Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose confirmed that an accident that occurred on the Satans neck Pass on the R58 road between Engcobo and Khowa (Elliot)has claimed five lives, while nine sustained various injuries at 08:30 today, April 2.
According to Binqose this incident occurred at about 8:30 today, when a minibus taxi lost control and overturned.
“A VW Minibus Sprinter with 14 occupants was travelling from Khowa direction (original from Rustenburg to Mthatha). Five occupants (three female adults, one adult male including two months boy died on the scene. The injured, four critical, three serious, the driver was among those who escaped unharmed,” said Binqose.
He added that the injured were taken to All Saints Hospital in Ngcobo, Mthatha General Hospital and Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha.
“Circumstances surrounding the cause of the crash are subject to investigations."
A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Ngcobo SAPS.
