SAPS Jeffreys Bay detectives arrested two suspects days after George Mildenhall (82), a Jeffreys Bay resident was attacked and severely assaulted in his house earlier in September.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that on September 13, the elderly man was found by his daughter lying on the floor with his hands bound.

She said that he sustained injuries to his head and household items were taken.

“Entry was gained by forcing the burglar bars open. Mildenhall was hospitalised in Gqeberha where he succumbed to his injuries on September 20,” said Naidu.

She said that on September 16, detectives arrested Zakhele Yake (27) and his girlfriend, Ria Maku (19) at a house in Griffiths Mxenge Street in Oceanview and items taken from the house in Mossel Street in Jeffreys Bay were recovered.

“Yake and Maku appeared in the Humansdorp Magistrate Court on September 18, on charges of house robbery and attempted murder. They appeared again in court on September 22 and now face a charge of murder,” said Naidu.

She said that they are remanded in custody until September 28 for a formal bail application.

Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Maj Gen Zolani Xawuka praised the detectives for their speedy reaction to information received from the community.

“The motive behind such a heinous act was robbery, a senseless crime that has claimed a life.

We are fully committed to ensuring that justice is served. We applaud the community’s commitment and support in helping us swiftly apprehend the suspects,” said Xawuka.
