  • Actor Dakota Johnson revealed that she could easily sleep for 14 hours a night, counting sleep as one of her main priorities.
  • But is there such a thing as too much sleep?
  • Experts usually recommend between seven and eight hours of sleep a day for adults.
  • According to the team at Winstons Beds, too much sleep can have the reverse effect, leaving you feeling even more tired the next day.

Actress Dakota Johnson sparked debate in December 2023 when she told the Wall Street Journal that she could easily sleep for 14 hours a night.

"I'm not functional if I get less than 10 [hours]," the Fifty Shades of Grey actor told the publication, adding that sleep is her "number one priority in life."

While getting enough sleep is essential for your overall health and well-being, too much sleep can be "problematic", experts at Winstons Beds said, according to Cover Media.

"Generally speaking, adults should be aiming for at least seven hours of sleep a night in order to re-energise, improve their mood and keep a healthy immune system."

Addressing Johnson's comment, they said: "Although it may sound appealing to some people, 14 hours of sleep would not be recommended. Too much or too little sleep over a long period of time can lead to an increased risk of anxiety, obesity and diabetes."

Experts added that sleeping "too much" can have an adverse effect, leaving you feeling even more tired.

"To get the most from your sleep, stick to the recommended amount of time of around seven or eight hours. If you're struggling with this amount of sleep, it may be time to seek help from a professional."
