  • This year introduced us to niacinamide and "glass skin", but what will be popular in the new year?
  • Dr Alek Nikolic shares skincare trends to look out for in 2024.
  • This includes a continued focus on minimalism as well as an increase in at-home skincare technology.

If you plan on adding a great skincare routine to your New Year's resolutions list, then you probably want to know what to keep an eye out for in 2024.

Skincare expert Dr Alek Nikolic has shared his top skincare trend predictions for the year ahead.

Trend 1: Edible Skincare - beauty from within

You've probably heard the popular saying, "You are what you eat". We've seen a move toward edible products in 2023, taking a more holistic approach to skincare, and that will continue into 2024, says Dr Nikolic.

"In conjunction with topical treatments, getting the right nutrients internally can do major things for the health of the skin, helping to maintain a bouncy, healthy complexion. Ideally, one would get all the vitamins and minerals needed from your diet, but even the healthiest eaters can benefit from a boost of supplementation."

He adds: "The moral of the story is that a supplement regimen can work in synergy with your diet and regular topical skincare routine for optimum skin health."

Trend 2: Skinimalism

Skinimalism - a combination of "skin" and "minimalism" - is a trend that took off in 2023. As the name suggests, it's all about taking a more simplistic approach to skincare. This differs from previous years, where it was popular to have 10 or more steps in your skincare routine.

"More people are looking for multipurpose products that combine powerful ingredients with minimal effort. We can expect a shift towards more concentrated beauty formulations, highlighting the era of mindful consumption and maximising results," says Dr Nikolic.

"Not only is this cost-effective compared to buying several products, but it will also have a positive impact on your skin barrier as you are moving away from the heavy layering".

Trend 3: Growth factor technology

A growth factor is a naturally occurring substance that helps to manage essential tasks like replicating cells and stimulating collagen production.

"When it comes to growth factors in cosmetics and skincare, we're looking at growth factors that are naturally produced by the body. These are applied to your skin with the intention of manipulating or 'tricking' the skin into thinking that it is young and healthy. In return, it will regenerate and repair itself."

Dr Nikolic predicts we'll see more of these treatments in 2024.

"The good news is that growth factors are great for every skin type, including sensitive skin, and most people don't experience any adverse reactions when using skin care containing growth factors."

Trend 4: Skin barrier health

Caring for the skin barrier is one of the most important parts of skincare. Moving into 2024, Dr Nikolic believes there will be more of a focus on the importance of a healthy skin barrier.

"If you're familiar with this term, you'll know the barrier function is an extremely important concept in skin care," says Dr Nikolic.

"Describing the strength and ability of our skin, the barrier is our protection against our external environment. A highly functioning and healthy skin barrier will ultimately allow our topical products and ingredients to effectively treat and maintain the skin."

A healthy skin barrier can create smooth, clear, even-toned skin. While a damaged barrier normally results in more redness, irritation, dryness and breakouts.

Trend 5: At-home skincare technology

At-home technology for the skin is already popular, and this market will continue to grow in 2024, says Dr Nikolic. Products include microcurrent, LED and ultrasound therapy devices.

"These at-home skincare devices can help you achieve healthier skin as long as you use them correctly and consistently," says Dr Nikolic.
