Anticipation for the 2024 BET Awards is building and BET has announced this year's nominees. African global stars' presence on the list shows how talent from the continent is making a significant impact.
Among them, Grammy Award-winning South African singer Tyla stands out with four nominations, underscoring her potential for a big win on culture's biggest night.
Tyla has earned nominations in the Best New Artist and Best International Act categories, highlighting her remarkable talent and growing influence. Additionally, her global chart-topping hit Water has secured her a spot in the coveted Viewers' Choice Award category.
This recognition caps a meteoric rise that began when she was pictured at the February 2023 Dolce & Gabbana show alongside Kim Kardashian and Michele Morrone. Since then, Tyla has been hailed as a game changer in the music landscape, known for her unique sound and striking looks.
Joining Tyla in the spotlight, Burna Boy, Tems, Ayra Starr, Focalistic, Davido, Lojay, Asake, Tyler ICU, and Seyi Vibes have also received nominations across various music categories. Particularly noteworthy, Ayra Starr shares the same number of nominations as Tyla, including Best New Artist and Best International Act, with an additional nod in the BET Her category for her hit song Commas.
The 2024 BET Awards will air live on Monday, 1 July at 02:00 WAT/03:00 CAT on BET Africa DStv Channel 129 and GOtv Channel 21, with a repeat at 18:00 WAT/19:00 CAT.
The pre-show kicks off an hour earlier.
Leading the pack of nominees this year is Drake, with seven nods, including Album of the Year for For All The Dogs (Scary Hours Edition) and multiple nominations for his collaborations. Nicki Minaj follows closely with six nominations, while J. Cole, Sexyy Red, SZA, and Victoria Monét each have five. Tyla, alongside 21 Savage, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Megan Thee Stallion, and Usher, all hold four nominations each.

BET also revealed a powerhouse performance lineup for the night, featuring GloRilla, Latto, Muni Long, Sexyy Red, Shaboozey, and Victoria Monét.
Organisers believe the awards reflect an abundance of creative expression and black excellence across music, television, film, and sports, with nominations selected by the BET Voting Academy, comprising entertainment professionals and influencers.
As we await this year's BET Awards, it's clear that this year's event will not only celebrate the extraordinary talents within the black community, but also shine a spotlight on the diverse cultural contributions from African artists like Tyla, who continue to shape and influence the global entertainment landscape.
