Most of us, when faced with a problem, turn to the things we’re familiar with, which is why many women assume that bladder leaks can be handled with pads designed for menstruation.

However, it’s important to note that sanitary products and purpose-made incontinence products are designed to do completely different things. Here are three reasons you should reach for a purpose-made product instead.

1. Absorbency. Sanitary products are designed to absorb blood, not urine. They also hold less fluid than menstrual pads, so you have less chance of leakage from the pad itself.

2. Odour control. Purpose-made incontinence products are designed to wick moisture away from your skin and eliminate urine odours.

3. Skin protection. Because purpose-made products wick the moisture away, your skin is protected from rashes caused by urine’s acidity.

It may feel more embarrassing to reach for sanitary products instead of purpose-made products, but you’re really not alone. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly how many people suffer from bladder leakage, both world-wide and in South Africa, but community-based studies show it’s anywhere between 14% and 67%1.

So, why not choose a product that is designed specifically to help with bladder leakage, and get the best possible results and comfort. That way you can live your life without incontinence holding you back!
