For most people, stress is an unavoidable part of life. But, while stress in small doses is generally fine and even considered healthy for our minds and bodies, high levels of stress on the other hand can have serious health implications.

When we get stressed, our bodies release a stress-coping hormone called cortisol. A short burst of cortisol is natural and assists us with our fight-or-flight response to avoid potential danger or negative outcomes. Prolonged cortisol release experienced daily, however, will end up supressing the immune system’s ability to fight infections.

Stress and Asthma. Stress has been shown to adversely affect lung function in patients with asthma. Asthma is a chronic disease that is characterised by inflammatory processes in the airways. Lung function declines with higher airway inflammation. It has been shown in studies that during periods of stress (for example examinations), airway inflammation in asthma patients worsens.

Infection. Our currently circulating COVID-19 is a respiratory virus that induces lung inflammation can cause a reduction in lung function.

Between stress and infection as two causes of lung inflammation, it means that keeping stress under control is an essential part of ongoing good immune-health and disease prevention protocol.

CBD for stress relief and improved immunity

Meditating and taking time out for self-care are good starting points to help manage stress, but CBD has shown promise as an alternative therapy for the management of mental health and emotional stress.

CBD has also shown beneficial anti-inflammatory effects in pre-clinical models of various chronic inflammatory diseases. In these studies, CBD decreased lung inflammation potentially through the suppression of an over-exuberant immune response.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the naturally occurring cannabinoids found in cannabis plants (Cannabis sativa). CBD is a non-psychotropic cannabidiol meaning it lacks the psychotropic effects (like an euphoric high) that the main plant compound D9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) exhibits.

In fact, CBD has been investigated for a variety of pharmacological properties and it is now clear that CBD has a therapeutic benefit in conditions such an stress, anxiety and depression.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) there is evidence that CBD may be a useful treatment for a number of other medical conditions.

In addition, CBD has no potential to induce dependence in the user and is not associated with abuse potential.

Besides its anxiolytic properties, CBD can exert a number of effects that impact our wellbeing – neuroprotective, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects

Because our bodies also naturally produce cannabis-like substances known as endocannabinoids (eCB’s), taking CBD oil has an even greater impact on overall wellbeing. CBD facilitates the functioning of the body’s existing cannabinoids to enhance their stress-relieving effects and boost the body’s ability to regulate a variety of physiological processes, including anxiety from chronic unpredictable stress, appetite, compulsive and memory storage cognitive functions, and others.

All in all, CBD may hold a key to managing stress with the added benefits of immune modulation and anti-inflammatory effects as we navigate through COVID and the general stresses of life itself!
