Anyone can get GORD. However, the following groups are more likely to suffer from reflux:
- Pregnant women
- Babies. Babies do not have a fully developed lower oesophageal sphincter that normally helps prevent reflux. This explains their tendency to vomit, which should lessen during the first months, as the anti-reflux mechanisms become stronger.
- Overweight people
- Smokers
- Asthma sufferers. People who have asthma tend to suffer from acid reflux more than the rest of the population.
- People who have a genetic predisposition. Acid reflux may run in your family.
