Put on your dancing shoes. Shed your worries and a few calories with a turn on the dance floor. Ballroom dancing burns 125 to 310 calories per hour. Energetic dancing – such as hip-hop and clubbing – can burn up to 500 calories per hour. Remember to drink lots of water, rather than alcohol, as you get into the groove.
Better breathing
Here's a good exercise to do before getting dressed for a party. It opens up your chest cavity, improving your breathing and energising you. It also relieves tension in your lower back and makes your arms more flexible.
Start by standing 90cm away from a wall, facing it. Place your hands on the wall, shoulder width apart, 60cm above your head. Lean onto your hands and let your head and neck drop forward, allowing your chest to sink down so that your back is bowed. Repeat three times. Don't hold this position for longer than 30 seconds at a time.
Treat your feet
Being danced off your feet can be exhilarating, but you'll need to treat your feet afterwards. Revive tired feet with a foot spray made by combining 45ml
witch hazel, 1 tablespoon rose-water, ¼ teaspoon glycerine and
15 drops of essential oil, such as refreshing peppermint.
Hold off hangovers
Ever wondered why your body reacts so severely to a few glasses too many?
That awful feeling the morning after is largely due to dehydration and
malnutrition. Dehydration kicks in because alcohol causes your body to lose
vital water. Not only does the alcohol flush out large quantities of water, it also takes with it vitamins, other nutrients and chemicals that your body needs to defend itself.
The best way to prevent a hangover is not to drink. Drinking lots of water between drinks, and not mixing different types of alcohol, are other useful preventative measures.
Another trusted cure is to drink lots of water before going to sleep, to help flush out the toxins. Continue your water regime the next day and replenish your nutrient loss by drinking fruit juice and eating lots of fruit and vegetables.
Banish puffy eyes
The combination of late nights, alcohol and salty snacks often leads to puffy eyes.
When you wake up with puffy eyes, don't rub. Rubbing will only serve to irritate your
eyes and the puffiness will take longer to disappear.
Wet a face cloth in iced water or wrap one around some ice cubes and place it over your eyes, or apply a soothing eye mask. A cold tea bag also works wonders. The tannin in the tea is a natural astringent that helps to tighten the skin and reduce puffiness. Prevent the tea bag from staining your skin by wrapping it in a tissue. Help prevent puffy eyes in the future by sleeping on two pillows to stop fluids from collecting under your eyes.
