If the pandemic has highlighted anything, it’s the importance of knowing your vitals. Being able to monitor your heart rate, do an ECG or check on blood oxygen levels could potentially be lifesaving.

Even if you look at your health holistically, you can track your sleep, get reminders to wash your hands, get alerts for your heart rate if it is  either too high or low, including irregular rhythms, which could potentially alert you to Atrial fibrillation. The default rate is set to 120 BPM but that can be adjusted.

Once you pair an Apple Watch Series 7 to an iPhone 6S or newer, you need to open the Health app to get started. It requires your basic info such as age, gender, blood type, and optionally, to enter any medical conditions.

One of the key features of the Series 7 is the ability to take an electrocardiogram, also known as an ECG, which records the timing and strength signals that make the heart beat. This data can help your doctor gain insight into your heart rhythm to look for irregularities. You need to set it up first before taking a reading.

Once you open the Health app, it will ask you to hold your finger on the crown for a 30 second reading, thereafter you can see a summary on your wrist. If you open the Health app, it will be more detailed with graphs, showing your average BPM, and the ability to export it as a PDF to send to your doctor. Important to note that it does not detect a heart attack.

In the case of testing positive for Covid-19, the Apple Watch Series 7 can aid in checking your blood oxygen levels so you can share it with your doctor daily. The app lets you check it at any time, or it can be set as a shortcut on your custom watch face where you can check once a day what your reading is.

To get going with tracking your blood oxygen, simply go into the Health app, which will show you how to take a measurement. You need to have the strap snug but comfortable and keep still for 15 seconds. It will let display your reading immediately after. You can view more in-depth reading from the app, by the hour, day, week, or month, including averages.

The Health app has a section for the heart that covers daily rate, heart rate variability, walking rate, and resting heart rate, which is useful for athletes. It also displays your cardio fitness levels, and will let you know if its low, below - or above average and high.

The Apple Watch Series 7 runs on watchOS8 and pairs with an iPhone 6S or newer that runs on the latest iOS version. There are many options to consider such as 41mm or 45mm face; straps in either small or large; and various finishes including stainless steel (Silver, Graphite, Gold), and aluminum (Green, Blue, Starlight, Product(RED)) or a Nike version. Apple Watch Series 7 is available at iStore from R8 799.
