  • Lindsey Pelas is a social media 'influencer' and Instagram model who makes a living off posting sexy selfies.
  • So one could say she is somewhat of an 'expert' when it comes to taking photos for social media.
  • Here, she shares three tips on how to take the perfect 'self-portrait'.

Good lighting

Lindsey's first tip for taking the perfect selfie is to always make sure to have good lighting.

"I highly recommend looking at the sun. Or you can get yourself an artificial light, they're called ring lights, it all works," she says.

According to Lindsey, this is the first and most important step.

Work your angles

The second step is to know you angles, says the influencer.

"Some of us are really short, I'm only 5'3. Some people are super duper tall, some of us are wider, some of us are are teeny tiny, and we all have an angle that works better for us than it does for anyone else. So practice your angles, don't be afraid to get it wrong," she adds.

"If one of my friends takes my photos from way up here, that's not really my friend. My friend knows to lay down and make me look six feet tall, because I'm 5.3. No one has to know that," she adds.

Don't be scared to use editing apps

Although often controversial, Lindsey says one should not be ashamed of making use of editing, as it can really enhance the look of a selfie.

"My third and favourite tip for taking a good selfie is to not be afraid of a little editing," she says.

According to Lindsey, we must not beat ourselves up for tweaking one or two things here and there.

"Here's the deal: every celebrity, sports star [and] politician has benefited from nice editing. So don't be afraid to get one of these editing apps. I use Face Tune. I love it. I think it's great to fix my blemishes," she says.

"I think you're totally entitled to edit yourself and present yourself to the world how you like. Who cares what people think," she concludes.

Don't over do it

However, it is interesting to note that, as mentioned in a previous W24 story, posting more selfies than regular pics on Instagram may damage your likability on social media. This is according to a study done by researchers at Washington State University.

In the study, around 100 graduates were asked to rate the Instagram profiles of 30 volunteers.

The posts were divided into three categories, "Posies", "Selfies", and "Something else."

Researchers found that those who posted "posies" rather than "selfies" scored more positively.

Researchers suggest that the reason for this is may be that "posies" may come across as less staged and more appealing.

So, if you're going to take a selfie, follow these three simple steps and remember to post a few "posies" in between.
