Mamelodi Sundowns could still pile up the misery for Kaizer Chiefs in the aftermath of the 5-1 massacre on Thursday night.
Mamelodi Sundowns could still pile up the misery for Kaizer Chiefs in the aftermath of the 5-1 massacre on Thursday night.

Kaizer Chiefs’ fresh wounds from the heavy defeat that they suffered in midweek could have salt added this weekend as Mamelodi Sundowns switch to another trophy chase.

Sundowns’ landslide victory over Chiefs meant they wrapped up their seventh consecutive league title with six games to play.

While Chiefs will go into yet another round of retrospective meetings about their chaos and crisis, Sundowns will switch gear to the Nedbank Cup with a trip to Stellenbosch FC for a semi-final date on Sunday.

The Nedbank Cup will present itself as the 18th trophy that Sundowns will aim to win, while Amakhosi watch and wait since their last silverware in May 2015.

Sundowns won the African Football League, which came with a purse of USD4 million (approx. R75 million) in November and with the DStv Premiership title done, that is number 17 in the bag, while Chiefs wallows in misery.

Chiefs’ trophy count in the PSL era years was at 20 when they lifted the league title under Stuart Baxter in May 2015 and they proudly stood as the country’s dominant club since the start of the PSL in August 1996.

The Brazilians only had 10 trophies at that time and third on the success table behind Orlando Pirates, who had won 12.

However, in the last nine years, the Chloorkop-based club has now gone on to surpass the Glamour Boys and create a gap of seven, which could stretch to eight at the end of the season if they add the Nedbank Cup.

At 27 trophies won in the PSL era years, Sundowns will have the comfort of remaining as the most successful club on the domestic front for a while to come considering what is happening at Chiefs.

The thought of silverware has long evaporated at Naturena as evidenced by that the highlight of the remainder of their season will just only be about getting into the Top 8.

Sundowns will travel to the Western Cape having had Ronwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau, Grant Kekana, Mothobi Mvala, Divine Lunga, Marcelo Allende, Aubrey Modiba, Thapelo Morena, Bathusi Aubaas, Themba Zwane, Junior Mendieta, Sipho Mbule and Peter Shalulile all not starting in the win against Chiefs on Thursday.

They are all expected to make up most of the starting XI that will play Stellies.
