Discovery group CEO Adrian Gore has described the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill as flawed, saying expected challenges to the legislation will likely see it being delayed for "decades".
Gore's comments came less than 24 hours after the Presidency announced that President Cyril Ramaphosa intends signing the controversial legislation into law on Wednesday, prompting criticism from Business Unity SA (BUSA) and the SA Health Professionals Collaboration (SAHPC), which represents more than 25 000 private and public sector healthcare workers. Momentum Metropolitan's health unit also criticised the bill's current format, calling it "unsustainable".
"We see no scenario in which there is sufficient funding for a workable and comprehensive NHI in its current form – hence our conviction that private sector collaboration is vital, and that full implementation of the bill remains a long way off – likely decades," Gore said in a statement on Tuesday.
