South Africa should be able to develop its uranium deposits into fuel for nuclear power, said Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe.

The minister was speaking at the Africa Energy Indaba on Tuesday. The conference is under way in Cape Town this week.

Noting a decision by the EU in 2022  to include nuclear and gas in a taxonomy for green investments, Mantashe said this should be a signal to the rest of the world to include the energy sources in their plans to transition to low-carbon emissions.
