The Life After Coal campaign, also known as Impilo Ngaphandle Kwamalahle, has requested that the public consultation period for the draft Integrated Resources Plan (IRP) of 2023 be extended by two months.
Life After Coal, which consists of civil society groups Centre for Environmental Rights, groundWork and Earthlife Africa, has raised concerns over the short time frame for public comment on what is essentially the blueprint for energy supply and demand in coming years.
The campaign, on 29 January, formally wrote to the director-general of the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE), Jacob Mbele, Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe, and Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, asking that the deadline for comments be extended from 23 February 2024 to 23 April 2024.
