A doctor in Mount Ayliff, a small town in the Eastern Cape, is accused of raping a 34-year-old woman inside his consulting room.
The doctor appeared in the EmaXesibeni Magistrates' Court on Wednesday and was charged with rape following his arrest on Tuesday.
"He was arrested for allegedly raping a 34-year-old patient inside a consulting room in Mount Ayliff Hospital on December 8,” said Eastern Cape NPA spokesperson Luxolo Tyali.
According to Tyali, when a nurse left the patient with the doctor, he locked the door and demanded that she perform oral sex on him.

"When the patient refused, he allegedly overpowered and raped her. When the nurse returned, she found the door to the consulting room locked and had to knock until the alleged rapist opened,” said Tyali.
The patient ran out, trembling, and reported her ordeal to the nurse and a friend who had accompanied her to the hospital.
The court postponed the matter to December 21 for formal bail application.

In August last year, police in Pretoria were actively searching for a gynaecologist who had allegedly raped a patient at Louis Pasteur Private Hospital.
Meanwhile, last month, the SA Police Service reported to Parliament that there were 17 566 pending sexual offences cases between April 1 and October 31 this year. Of these, 6 397 were backlog cases.
