In a survey of 2 000 people by Hammonds Furniture in the UK, 30% of those asked confessed that they washed their bedding once a year or less, while a further 38% said they also washed their coats once a year or less.

Dr Aragona Giuseppe, GP and medical adviser at Prescription Doctor, warned that not washing bedsheets regularly could lead to a risk of infection, acne and smelliness.

“If you do not wash clothing items often, you could be at risk of infection or just feeling and smelling unclean.

When it comes to age, millennials are the cleanest, with 17% washing clothing after one wear, while 13% of those older than 65 had the lowest percentage of people who wash their clothes after one use

“Bedsheets and pillowcases should be washed because, if they are dirty, this could promote acne, spots and other skin issues due to the dirty bacteria on the sheets transferring to your skin,” Giuseppe told Hull Live newspaper.

More than a quarter of those surveyed admitted they only washed their cushions and blankets once a year, while a further 18% washed their jeans just as infrequently.

When it came to washing underwear, the majority of women said they washed their undergarments after every wear, while a quarter of men admitted to washing their underwear after wearing them five times.

The worst offender when it comes to washing clothes was revealed to be Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, with one in seven residents washing their underwear after 10 wears or more.

One in five were found to wash their socks after 10 wears or more, while 15% claimed to wash their gym kits just once a year.

Meanwhile, the cleanest city goes to Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in the UK, with more than half of residents washing T-shirts after just one use and one in six washing all their clothing after one use.
