A mother of four who’s paralysed after she was thrown from her bed while having sex is suing the bed company.
Claire Busby (46), from Maidenhead in Berkshire, England, suffered serious spinal injuries when she was launched from the super king-size bed, Daily Mail reports.
Claire’s is demanding £1million (about R18,8 million) in damages, claiming the incident happened due to the bed being “defective”.
Berkshire Bed Company, trading as Beds Are Uzzz, denies any liability for Claire’s injuries and argues that the bed was properly assembled, The Sun reports.
The bed was one of five delivered to Claire’s home in August 2013 when she was renovating her property.
She was injured while having sex with her partner a week after the bed was delivered, she told the court on Monday 15 October, The Sun reports.
Claire, who was left tetraplegic and is now wheelchair-bound, claims the bed was missing two vital “glider” feet when it was delivered, which meant one side of the bed was 4cm lower than the other.
She told the court she was kneeling in the middle of the bed when she decided to move position.
She “swung her legs” from underneath herself before lying back on the bed.
At that point, she claims, the bed gave way and she toppled off the end and landed on her head.
“I spun around, I put my hand down and then I felt like I was catapulted off the back of the bed.
“My head hit the floor, I fell to the side and then I heard like a spring in my body snap, it felt like,” The Mirror reports her saying.
Her sister, Natalie Busby, told the court that when she went to Claire’s home after the accident she noted there were two feet missing from the bed.
Lawyers for the bed company maintain that not only was the bed properly assembled at the time of delivery, but that even if the two gliders were missing it wouldn’t have caused the bed to lose balance.
The court hearing continues.
