There are numerous causes for a sore throat. It is important to remember that a sore throat is merely a symptom of an underlying condition. To relieve the sore throat, your doctor will diagnose the cause and treat the cause. Once the cause is treated, your symptom will be relieved.

The following is a list of the most common conditions associated with a sore throat.

Infective Conditions          

Bacterial

•Streptococcus infection (Strep Throat) 
Tonsillitis 
•Peritonsillar abcess – an infection of the tissues around the tonsils
•Epiglottitis

Viral

The common cold  
Laryngitis  
Infective mononucleosis (Kissing disease)
Mumps

Fungal

Candida (especially in HIV infected patients)

Non-infective conditions

•Environmental factors        
Smoking, Air pollution, Air conditioned rooms
•Screaming, excessive singing
Allergies

•Foreign Bodies
Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
