Teenage boy and diabetes struggling with weight issues

Dear Dr May, Thank you for this platform. My son is 16 years of age and was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes mid 2018. According to the specialist he was in a honeymoon period whereby his sugar levels where constant and now they are reaching levels of 25.6 but without any Ketones being present. He sticks to a strict diet but is not putting on any weight in fact he is losing weight and this is very concerning. He does exercise and cheats very rarely. Your advice would be sincerely appreciated as being a Type 1 Diabetic Mom one feels mostly lost and scared that things could go horribly wrong. Sincere thanks, appreciation and gratitude.

It sounds like he is now out of the honeymoon period, as his glucose levels are raised. The higher glucose levels can be from his liver(even on a good diet), as insulin normally tells the liver to make less glucose, and if he now has too little of his own insulin, the liver will overproduce glucose.  The weight loss is as a result of calories being lost in the urine, as glucose isn't entering his cells. He will need his insulin doses increased by his doctor
