Q
Outcome studies for TMS

It has been suggested that I try TMS as a possible aid for my depression, which hasn't been relieved by medication. Before I commit to this therapy I would appreciate some outcome data and/or anecdotal observations.

Hi Julie,
TMS is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation,  This is a promising and still effectively experimental method of treatment using strong magnetic impulses to influence brain cells. I am aware that there are some doctors at UCT, Cape Town, who have been researching this, and they may perhaps provide some treatments there, but I'm not aware of this treatment method being generally available in South Africa.
There are a number of other ways to help people who have not responded satisfactorily to basic treatment for depression, which need to be considered, including CBT psychotherapy : do discuss ALL options, including TMS. with the doctor in charge of your case, and consider their availability, advantages, and disadvantages
