Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) is a very rare disease and affects between 1.6 and 2 individuals per 100 000 worldwide each year, representing nearly 15% of all leukaemias.
The first official South African patient support and advocacy group for people suffering from Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) called "CML SA", serves to empower those battling with this very rare form of cancer, by providing a collective voice, relevant and up-to-date information and support, ultimately serving to advance the needs of CML patients as a whole.

- CML affects between 1.6 and 2 individuals per 100 000 worldwide each year
- CML represents nearly 15% of all leukaemias
- There are an estimated 5 430 new cases of CML in the United States each year
- An estimated 610 people die from CML in the United States each year
- More men than women develop CML (3 210 men & 2 220 women in the US per year)
- The cause of CML is still unknown
- The only known risk factor for CML is exposure to high doses of radiation
- The Philadelphia chromosome (Ph1) is present in over 95% of patients with CML
- The risk of getting CML increases with age
- The median age at diagnosis of CML is 55-60 years
- Fewer than 10% of CML cases are diagnosed in patients younger than 20 years
- CML sufferers can expect to live much longer than before, thanks to new novel therapies
