Can alcoholism trigger cancer?

We are aware about New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle's struggles with alcoholism. After undergoing a liver transplant in 1995 Mantle was diagnosed with kidney cancer! Since it is well known how alcoholism destroys the kidneys did being alcoholic trigger Mantle's killer kidney cancer?

Dear Greg
It is not really alcoholism - it is alcohol itself. There is no safe limit of alcohol consumption. According to the International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC), a part of the World Health Oganization, alcohol is a Group 1 cancer causing substance.

Group 1: The agent is carcinogenic to humans. This category is used when there is sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity (cancer causing ability) in humans. Exceptionally, an agent may be placed in this category when evidence of carcinogenicity in humans is less than sufficient but there is sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in experimental animals and strong evidence in exposed humans that the agent acts through a relevant mechanism of carcinogenicity.
