Brandon Kruger, who has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend 16 times, has asked the court to hold an enquiry into his fitness to stand trial.

Wearing a black T-shirt and jeans, the 43-year-old Kruger briefly appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Friday afternoon.

The State placed it on record the defence wanted to bring an application for an inquiry to be held in terms of Section 77 of the Criminal Procedure Act.
