For the past few years, tote bags have topped many trends thanks to their simplicity and irresistibly cute designs. However, they can be uncomfortably impractical and, surprisingly, not as good for the planet as one might think, writes Phumi Ramalepe. 

I got my very first tote bag sometime during my varsity years between 2015 and 2016, and I remember thinking, “What a cool and cute invention this is.” And guess what? They were very affordable and promoted for environmental sustainability, too! Or at least that’s what I thought.
