Today, Capensis is wholly owned by JFW and run by South African-born winemaker Graham Weerts, who has spent the past 20 years making wine in America.

REVIEW | Under the Tamarind Tree: Partition, mass migration and a haunting secret

By: Karabo K Kgoleng

In 1947, the British Empire's response to the demand for independence from the people of the Indian subcontinent – one of its most lucrative colonies – was a violent and purposeful tantrum.

In its supposed duty to civilise and modernise its subjects, the Crown imposed one final condition for their freedom: the separation of people who had lived together for centuries before colonisation (to varying extents of war and peace along the lines of religion). The effects of the Partition of the territory into the states of India and Pakistan continue to reverberate to this day.

Nigar Alam was born in Pakistan, and her novel, Under the Tamarind Tree, is an ode to the inheritance of this legacy. It is a complex heritage, and she weaves it into a tale of intergenerational secrets, class divisions and the love of botany.

Charlotte Bauer | Diary of a semigrant: WhatsApp warnings and the quirky perils of paradise living

By: Charlotte Bauer

One of the best ways to get to know your new neighbours without having to bake a cake is to join the community WhatsApp group.

Having followed the daily chat for a few months now, I can report that apart from business-as-usual - garage sales, dolphin sightings, lost beach towels/wedding rings/flip-flops - my neighbourhood is seething with dangers.

These turn out to be the kind of life-and-death perils I hadn't considered when leaving gun-ho Johannesburg under the impression that moving to a picture postcard fishing village behind the lentil curtain would be safer.

EXCERPT | 'To end her young life': What really happened between AKA and Anele?: When Love Kills is the tragic story of Kieran Forbes, the award-winning hip-hop star known as AKA, whose highly public life unravelled when he embarked on an obsessive relationship with 21-year-old Anele Tembe. When she "fell" to her death from the 10th storey of the Pepperclub Hotel in April 2021, after a long night of heated arguing, details would emerge that showed the couple had been caught up in a whirlwind of toxic obsession, alleged substance abuse and violence. Then, in February 2023, AKA was gunned down outside a popular restaurant in Durban. Many believed it was a hit to avenge Anele's death. This torrid tale is epic and devastating in its brutal repercussions.

In this excerpt, Melinda Ferguson asks what could have happened on the fateful night Anele died?
